LITHUANIA CELEBRATES HER 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MEMBERSHIP IN THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE

On May 14th Lithuania celebrates its 20th anniversary of the membership in the Council of Europe.

Along with Estonia and Slovenia, Lithuania ratified the Treaty of London (the constituent treaty of the Council of Europe) on May 14th, 1993; and has proven herself to be a valuable member of the organization ever since then.

By joining the organization, Lithuania committed herself to execute such requirements as signing the Statute of the Council of Europe, ratifying the European Charter of Local Self-Government and the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

During the 20 years of her membership Lithuania has become an active member looking to secure the main principles of the Council of Europe, especially those regarding the establishment of the human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the eastern neighbourhood of the EU.
