Commemorating the 35th anniversary of January 13 events

Running to mark the 35th anniversary of the January 1991 events

As the Day of the Defenders of Freedom approaches, Lithuanians residing in Strasbourg and around, together with diplomats representing Lithuania to the Council of Europe, took part in the annual Respect Run on Sunday. This year’s event held special significance, marking the 35th anniversary of the January 1991 events, which remain a defining moment in Lithuania’s struggle for freedom and independence.

The run was given particular warmth, energy, and beauty by its youngest participants — students of the Strasbourg Lithuanian School “Gandriukai”, whose enthusiastic presence added a truly meaningful dimension to the commemoration.

The run and walk both began and concluded at the Orangery Park, near the Lithuanian oak tree planted there in 2015 upon the initiative of Lithuanian Member of the European Parliament Petras Auštrevičius. The oak stands as a lasting symbol of resilience, continuity, and Lithuania’s enduring ties with Europe.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Strasbourg Lithuanian Union (l’Union des Lituaniens de Strasbourg) for their reliable partnership and for their unwavering love and dedication to Lithuania.
