AMBASSADOR G.ŠERKŠNYS DEPOSITED THE INSTRUMENT OF RATIFICATION OF THE CONVENTION ON THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN AGAINST SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AND SEXUAL ABUSE
On the 9th of April 2013 Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the Council of Europe Ambassador G.Šerkšnys officially transmitted to the Secretary General Deputy G.Battaini-Dragoni the instrument of ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse.
The objective of the Convention is to prevent and combat sexual exploitation and abuse of children (any person under the age of 18 years), to ensure proper investigation of the criminal offences, the assistance to the child victims and their families. The Convention covers the specific preventive and protective measures, the child-friendly procedures for investigation and prosecution, the recording and storing of data on convicted sex offenders, the international co-operation and monitoring mechanism.Lithuania signed the Convention on 25th of October 2007 together with the first countries in Lanzarote, Spain. The Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse is also called the Lanzarote Convention.
On 6th of November 2012 the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania ratified the Lanzarote Convention.
According to the Article 45 of the Lanzarote Convention, the Convention will enter into force on the first day of the month following the expiration of a period of three months after the date of the deposit of its instruments of ratification.
